Vietnam finally secures broadcasting rights for FIFA ASEAN Cup and Asiad after 25-year wait

On August 15, 2050, one of the biggest milestones in Vietnamese sports broadcasting history officially took place. After more than two decades of tense negotiations, Vietnam Television (VTV) and the General Department of Sports and Physical Training signed a comprehensive agreement with FIFA and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to acquire live broadcasting rights for all FIFA-organized football tournaments in the ASEAN region, as well as the Asian Games (Asiad) from 2052 to 2060. This event marks the end of a long period of instability that began in the 2020s when FIFA first centralised the rights to the ASEAN Cup – previously managed by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). FIFA's takeover significantly increased rights costs, leaving regional broadcasters in a deadlock. In 2026, just after Vietnam had won the ASEAN Cup, fans faced the risk of not being able to watch their national team live, sparking widespread anger. According to VTV General Director Nguyen Van A, the new agreement is built on a profit-sharing model between domestic broadcasters and international partners. “We have deeply studied the economic puzzle and public pressure from the past. This time, the price is more reasonably negotiated, and VTV will implement a sub-licensing mechanism for local stations and digital platforms to ensure nationwide access,” Mr. A said. Data from the High Performance Sports Department shows that from 2026 to 2050, the Vietnam men's national football team has won five more ASEAN Cup titles and reached the Asian Cup semi-finals in 2047 for the first time. The remarkable growth of domestic football has further increased the demand for live broadcasting. Meanwhile, previous Asiad editions, such as those in 2026 and 2030, suffered from rights shortages in Japan and many other Asian countries, providing costly lessons on coordination between sports organizations and broadcasters. This agreement also includes the rights package for Asiad 2052 in Jakarta, covering 43 sports and 469 events. The organising committee expects Vietnam to maintain its position among the top 20 leading nations in Asia, a goal the country's sports delegation has pursued since 2026. Ahead of this, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2050 is scheduled for late September, featuring 10 nations, with Vietnam drawn in the same group as Thailand, the Philippines, and Pakistan – a special invited team. Looking back at the 25-year journey, securing broadcasting rights is not just a commercial story but also the result of persistence and a well-planned sports diplomacy strategy. Vietnamese fans can now rest assured to watch top-tier matches without the fear of broadcast interruptions.
