Honda Center 2027: Anaheim's Ice Arena Becomes the Rehearsal Room for Olympic Volleyball

Honda Center in Anaheim broke ground in 2026 with a single purpose: keeping ice cold for the Anaheim Ducks. Its roof sits lower than a multi-purpose arena standard, its refrigeration plant runs beneath a concrete slab, and every mechanical line was routed around a three-centimetre sheet of ice maintained all year. In mid-August, when Orange County temperatures reach 32 degrees Celsius, technicians still run compressors to stop the surface from melting. Under LA28's venue plan, that same building will host the Olympic volleyball tournament in 2028, and a year earlier it will serve as the organisers' rehearsal room.

I have sat in a few arenas dressed up this way, and the first thing you notice is always the smell. The raw rubber of a sport floor laid over a surface built for another game. Binh Duong's stand had no television feed, but the fans knew every run-up by heart, and I learned that an arena does not change its nature just because someone rolls a mat across its floor.

An arena that sits outside every cluster

Honda Center stands in Anaheim, Orange County, roughly 50 kilometres south-east of downtown Los Angeles. It is one of the few LA28 venues outside Los Angeles County, while most Olympic infrastructure is grouped into clusters: downtown, Inglewood, Long Beach, the San Fernando Valley. A venue detached from every cluster means its own transport plan, its own volunteer pool and its own security problem.

Its capacity of about 17,000 in hockey configuration and nearly 18,000 in basketball setup places it among the largest indoor volleyball arenas in Olympic history. The Los Angeles Games are scheduled for July 14 to July 30, 2028.

The current Olympic volleyball format fields 12 men's and 12 women's teams. The host quota belongs to the United States. The rest is distributed through Olympic qualifying tournaments and the FIVB world ranking within a window that closes after the Volleyball Nations League. For Paris 2026, the breakdown was host France, six places from three Olympic qualifying tournaments (top two each) and five places from the world ranking. Asian volleyball holds no continental quota inside that system.

A rehearsal tests engineering and operations, not volleyball

Converting an ice rink into a volleyball court takes about 1,000 square metres of sport flooring, a refrigeration plant switched to standby, and an indoor temperature held between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius with humidity control so the ball's flight does not drift. High-definition broadcast lighting needs 1,500 to 2,000 lux, while Honda Center's low roof limits rigging and camera positions. FIVB rules require at least 12.5 metres of clearance above the court; the centre-hung video board eats into that space, and anyone who has watched a high dig knows why the detail matters.

LA28 engineers will weigh two options: keep the ice and lay insulation panels on top, or shut the plant down entirely for the competition period. The first costs more but keeps the floor stable; the second is cheaper but lets the concrete slab expand with temperature. Arguments of this kind have delayed previous Games.

Operations run alongside. Spectator flow from car parks to ticket gates, queue times, interview zones, referee and video-review routes all have to be measured with a stopwatch. At a venue away from every cluster, average spectator travel time can rise by half again compared with downtown arenas, and that changes how sessions are scheduled.

The sporting layer comes last. The Binh Duong hot seat in 2026 taught me that the ball rolls first and the story follows.
