My Love for Chevron {DIY Window Valances}

I am LOVING chevron prints.  I think they are funky and chic all at the same time!

I was looking for yellow/mustard chevron valances for my kitchen windows for quite some time and I wasn't having any luck.

I hit up Pinterest and became inspired to make my own valances. <-crazy talk, I know!!

I knew making these valances would force me to remember how to use a sewing machine (it's been at least 15 years since I touched one..lol).

So I hit up Hobby Lobby and found my lovely chevron print and just waited until I had the "urge" to attempt this monstrosity of a project.

I bought the fabric back in May and it took me two months before I felt "ready" to tackle the most challenging DIY project I've ever completed, as of yet.  Ha!

And I did it!

It took me 2.5 hours to remember how to use the machine (I watched this video as a refresher) and to sew successfully without jamming or sewing the same spot, repeatedly.

I'm going to attempt to explain how I made these but please keep in mind, I am not a savvy sewer.  There may be easier ways to do some of the steps but again, I'm not veteran in this world- I'm just starting..lol.

DIY Chevron Valances:

Obviously your measurements will vary depending on the size of your window, mine was 36.5″ across so my fabric measurement was 45″ across and 25″ down. When using material with a pattern, keep in mind the direction of the pattern; so when you make multiple valances, the patterns are facing the same direction.

I used Andrew's laser pointer as a guide to cut straight across the fabric

Press a 1/2″ seam on the sides of the rectangle fabric.
(I used pins to keep it in place as I ironed.)

Press a 3" seam on the bottom of the fabric.

Now sew the sides and bottom seam into place.

Take the top of your valance press a 3" seam then sew a seam right along the bottom.  You are making the pocket for your curtain rod to slide through.

Slide your rod through the pocket of your valance.

Then hang your valances and Wallah!

I think they look pretty good!  What do you think?

If your not looking to sew, here's a "no-sew" DIY valance I found on Pinterest (here).
